Prof Dave Stuart and researchers from across the globe are collaborating on a project that aims to develop an entirely synthetic vaccine to combat polio and eradicate the virus.

Current immunisation methods that use traditional inactivated viral shell proteins to stimulate immunity occasionally cause re-activation in the gut and pass to unvaccinated people. Other key British figures on the team are Prof Ian Jones from Reading University, Prof Dave Rowlands at the University of Leeds, and Dr Andy Macadam at the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control.
